Yamuna Chhath is a very religious Hindu festival. It is observed in several Indian cities such as Mathura, Gokul and Vrindavan. Two Chhath pooja festivals are observed: one which falls during Karthik month and the other during Chaitra month. According to our Hindu Panchang, this festival falls on the sixth day of Shashti Tithi.
The festival on 3rd April 2025 arrives in Shukla paksha of Chaitra Month. People pray to Goddess Yamuna with love, faith and utmost devotion. As per Vedic texts, Goddess Yamuna is the daughter of Surya and wife of Shri Krishna.
Religious Significance of Yamuna Chhath 2025
India is known as the ‘Land of Rivers’. We worship rivers with great devotion. One among them is the sacred Mother Yamuna. As per a Vedic text, Shri Hari Vishnu was incarnated as Lord Krishna. While the divine mother Maa Lakshmi came down as Radha Rani. All these incidents took place during the Dwaparyug.
The heavenly Yamunaji was brought by Maa Lakshmi during this period. Later, Shri Krishna commanded Goddess Yamuna to descend from Golok, the home of Lord Krishna. Thus, Yamunaji obeyed him and arrived on Earth in the form of a river.
According to Vamana Purana, it is mentioned that when Sati was killed Mahadev travelled the world with her body in deep sorrow. Due to Mahadev’s sorrow, he jumped into the river Yamuna. Eventually, he ended up calm and detached from the maternal world.
Due to this, the river turned black. Later, this river served as an abode to the Serpent Kali who was later killed by Shri Krishna. Eventually after Kaliya’s death, Lord Krishna touched the river Yamuna with his lotus feet. This way Yamunaji regained her eternal beauty.
Importance of taking a dip in the Sacred River Yamuna
Yamuna is the daughter of Lord Surya and Mother Chaya. She was the younger sister of Yamraj (the god of death). Yamraj loved and cared for her sister Yamuna since childhood. However, Yamraj ji blessed his sister Yamuna that whoever takes a bath in the Yamuna River will never go to Yamlok.
Based on this story of Yamunaji, devotees express their gratitude to Yamunaji on this auspicious day of Yamuna Chhath. They ask for good health, clearing off sins and attaining divinity. Religious texts suggest that bathing in the Yamuna River not only purifies the body but also replenishes the human soul.

As per Hindu tradition, Chunri Manorath is a special ritual. During this day Goddess Yamuna is draped with saree. Chunri means a sacred scarf and Manorath means a heartwarming wish. This attire is a symbol of divine femininity.
It depicts the power of womanhood celebrating grandeur. As per Vedic traditions, it is believed that no Indian wedding, baby shower or any special occasion remains incomplete without a Chunri. It truly signifies blessing and protection from the divine mother.
Legends and Significance behind Chunri Manorath Ritual
Once Shri Krishna disappeared from Raas Leela. This situation caused havoc among Gopis. They searched for him everywhere. In desperation, they went to flowers and trees to plead them for guidance. However, they reached to banks of the Yamuna River and sang Gopi Gita.
They sang with utmost devotion and love. Moved by their devotion and care, Yamunaji blessed them, and Shri Krishna appeared again in a radiant form. As a token of love and gratitude, the Gopis offered her with silk sarees. Since then, there has been a tradition pertaining to offering saris to Maa Yamuna.
The ritual proceeds with devotees performing Ganesh pooja along with Kalash and Matrika pooja. Afterwards, two pots are decorated. These pots symbolize Lord Krishna and Goddess Yamuna. Devotees carrying new and colourful sarees on their heads.
While moving towards Yamunaji they chant Shri Krishna’s names. A boat then moves in unity and stretches the saree across the river. The sight is graceful and looks as if Maa Yamuna is wearing a beautiful saree. Offer around 101 to 401 sarees that are stitched united to form a long flowing saree.
