Maruti, also known as Lord Hanuman and Sankat Mochan, is the monkey deity who is worshipped during Hanuman Janmotsav. Maruti, son of Mata Anjani and Sumeru Raj Kesari was born on this auspicious day, thus marking his birth anniversary. Hanuman Jayanti is among the popular festivals celebrated on the full moon day of Chaitra’s Shukla Paksha.

During this day, devotees from all around the corner gather and worship Hanuman Ji with great devotion. People pray with love, sincerity, clarity and pure heart to bless and protect them against negative forces. Bhajan’s kirtans and bandaras are organised in many Hanuman temples.

History behind celebrating Hanuman Jayanti

According to Bhavartha Ramayana, Anjani the mother of Maruti prayed to Lord Shiva for blessing her with a child. At the same time, King Dasharath under the guidance of Rishi Shringi performed yagna for his three wives for bearing children. He took the payasam and distributed it among his three wives.

Later, Lord Ram, Lakshman ji, Bharath and Shatrughna were born to the three wives. A bird hovering over the Kheer bowl snatched a small portion of the Kheer. Later dropped it over Sumeru mountain where Maa Anjana was performing her pooja and rituals. Pawan (Wind God) took the pudding and gave it to Mata Anjaneya. She consumed the pudding. Thus, Lord Hanuman was born through the divine blessings of Lord Mahadeva.

Another religious text Valmiki Ramayan, suggests that Lord Hanuman’s father Kesari was the son of Bhrihaspati. He was the king of Sumeru. Anjana the mother of Lord Hanuman offered penance to Lord Shiva for twelve long years. Bholenath, pleased by her devotion, granted her son named Maruti through Vayu. Due to this hanuman, Ji is also known as Vayu or Pawanputra.
